Today I am grateful to have MS… it’s a stretch to say that lol
My pre treatment bloods came back and it’s turns out I have latent tuberculosis
something I may not have found out until too late had I not had MS. Bit of a set back as I need to see the respiratory team before I can start treatment and have my MMR again as I’m not immune to mumps.
Today im calling it a win!

Hi, so interesting to hear this as I also found out today that along with MS, I have latent TB! A thing I had never even thought to worry about
Can I ask, did you have the BCG vaccine as a teenager? (Apparently they stopped offering these to all teenagers in the UK in 2005, so this might depend on how old you are)
I was in secondary school in the late 90s and remember having a scratch test for TB when I was about 13/14, a week before they came back to give us all the BGC. I was the envy of my class as my skin test came back positive so I didn’t have to have the jab! From googling I think this means I may have had latent TB all those years ago, and they just didn’t consider it worth treating at the time?
Hi yes I did I have the scar to prove it
I also had to have my mmr again as I wasn’t immune from rubella and I had that too as a child.
It’s definitely an odd one I have no idea how I got it. But in some ways I’m grateful they found it I don’t think it’s very pleasant if it becomes active.
Have you started antibiotics yet? I’m on rifampicin I didn’t have the duel antibiotic because they didn’t want to risk a worsening of my nerve symptoms. I’m on them for four months and can’t start treatment until it’s completed.
Hi, sorry for the late reply, I only just saw this! Haven’t started antibiotics yet. In the letter I got in July I was told I’d be referred to the medical team who would be in touch about starting antibiotics, but I haven’t heard anything yet. I’m going to give the neurology secretary a call tomorrow to chase, as I’m also waiting to find out when I can start on Kesimpta. I’m hoping soon, the MS nurse who I spoke to at the end of July seemed to think that the antibiotics for TB wouldn’t prevent me starting Kesimpta, but I’ve read contradictory things online about this!
I hope it doesn’t prevent you from starting treatment I can’t start mine until the course is finished. To be honest you should have been referred to respiratory and if you haven’t had an xray they would want one too just to double check there isn’t any active infection. My consultant couldn’t fathom how I got it I don’t fit the usual criteria for catching it.
I was due to start Kesimpta about 4 months ago. My pre blood checks also showed I had latent TB. I just finished my anti biotic tablets yesterday. It was a 3 month course. The anti biotic treatment has delayed my Kesimpta and I was put on capaxone instead as this drug works differently and is not a problem whilst on the tablets. I can hopefully start on kesimpta now I have completed the antibiotics. I was referred to respiratory and had a chest xray which was clear but just my luck I have a kidney issue and urology seem to think judging from the ct scan that the TB damage is in my kidney. Once you start at the hospital its never ending, one thing seams to lead to another.
The marker that shows in the blood just shows you have been in contact with TB at some time in your life, possibly even many years back. This is the explanation I was given from respiratory anyway.
Good luck with your treatment.
