Can anybody give me any advice pleeeeeeease.
For the past few weeks I have been unable to sleep with the exception of just one night,
I think that night was just from pure exhaustion.
All this started from the time of my lumbar puncture although my Neurologist tells me that it isn’t a side effect of the LP.
Is insomnia an MS thing ???
I have tried nightol and also a vegan branded tablet that was recommended to me but with no luck.
I find myself yawning all day and feeling sleepy but when I try to actually sleep either in bed at night or during the day it is impossible. I end up lying there yawning with my eyes shut for literally hours on end. On the very few occasions I do manage a short nap it is then impossible to fall back to sleep again.
I am not hungry and I don’t have caffeine after noon.
Any help greatly appreciated.
I am hopeful that if I can manage 2 or 3 nights I maybe able to return to normal.

Hello Dave,
I believe insomnia is common in people with multiple sclerosis, I usually get 3 or 4 hours sleep a night, I’m lucky if I get 5.
I don’t drink caffeine/alcohol anymore or have a big meal or pick up my smartphone in the evenings, I think some sleep however short is better than none, I tend to get mood swings the next day if I have a sleepless night.
Sweet dreams,
JP
Insomnia is the pits. I go a bit bonkers after a few nights of poor sleep. Best advice I ever had is that sleep always wins. Not as soon as you would like, maybe, but in the end sleep wins, and you get what you need. That thought has brought me comfort when I thought the misery of insomnia would never end.
Im the opposite - i sleep too much - maybe focus on your mental wellbeing if sleep wasnt an issue previously - the mind is very powerful x best wishes x
Sorry to hear about your problems sleeping. I understand that yes , insomnia can be an effect of MS but it doesn’t affect everyone and I guess that it can come and go. I haven’t experienced it and if anything sleep a lot more than I used to.
Have you been in touch with your MS Nurse about it? She/he might have other MS patients who experience insomnia and have found their own ways of dealing with it.
@muchthesamemuchness
Thanks pal, I used to be able to sleep for hours on end. It all just seems to be since my lumber puncture Ive had an issue. I thought I’d sleep better once that was out of the way but no
@alison100 You’re right it would seem, I had a nytal last night and went to bed at half eight like a saddo but slept all night for the first time this week. whether the exhaustion won or the tablet I don’t know but I’ll take it either way. fingers crossed for tonight. and every other night for that matter
@PaulaMac227
Hi paula I feel like I could sleep all day but just can’t. so frustrating. I think I’m going to bed now expecting not to sleep and then concentrating on it too much, I’ll try and break the habit and see how I get on.
@Hank_Dogs
I haven’t been given a MS nurse yet. I’m still waiting for my lumbar results to find out if I satisfy the MS requirements or if they just send me away with no treatment.
My neurologist dismissed it as a side effect but it seems others don’t agree.
Thanks to all for the replies. Sleep well everyone.
Regards
Dave
Don’t know if you will be able to access this but see the link below. Professor Giovannoni provides a wealth of well informed into MS, MS Research and latest thinking including his own
@Hank_Dogs
Thanks for that link, it makes interesting reading. I didn’t sleep a wink last night so hopefully Ive picked up a few tips.
Mine has only been since my lumbar puncture s I am hoping its not MS related and is just unfortunate timing.
Thanks again
Dave
