Recently I was helping my now ex-boyfriend in A&E to get better and the senior Sister said to me 'Have you eaten and then said I know my cousin has MS and she was fine until she hit 40 and then went completely down hill and never got better. I wouldn’t mind but I hit that big 40 next month and she knew that as we had been discussing ages whilst waiting in A&E! Now it is on my mind that this could happen to me which I know is silly. But why do people say such things??? XXX
I see this post is still going strong and more interesting stories are being added.
I like the one where someone said she had a touch`` of ms once etc............now that
s a great one, eh?
When I first got my scooter, a neighbour, said I hope it doesnt make you lazy!
. I said I was hoping I would have less pain and falls. Cheek!
Someone else said Id be laughing all the way to the bank with my benefits. I said I
d be crawling!
What on earth is there to be catty or jealous of, when someone has an incurable, chronic illness! They are welcome to all the fringe benefits
, as long as they take the condition too, eh?

I was ‘lucky’ enough to have a pay out on my critical illness policy and someone actually had the cheek to say to me that they’d love to be diagnosed with MS in order to get their mortgage paid off!!! I was speechless! I would happily give every penny back to NOT have MS!!
This thread just highlights the general ignorance about MS especially when someone would love to have MS so they can get their mortgage paid off! What a shame there is no way to let these people try our symptoms for a little while and then see if they would ‘love’ it?
I still think I prefer the ones who tell me they know someone who is ‘fine’ with MS to the ones who tell me that they know someone with it who was bedridden and tube-fed within 5 years. After several minutes in this vein they then say ‘I’m not upsetting you, am I?’. (Oh no, I love to hear how bad it could get!) Unbelievably someone did this to me at my mum’s funeral …

To be fair, that bar graph is just about people on the site who have MS and their age.
There’s more in their 60s than in their 20s. There’s very few aged 70+ but it’s less likely that those 70+ would be using internet forums, with or without MS. It doesn’t mean they’re all dead.
I was in my 20s when diagnosed and I didn’t look at that and think that there are so few in their 20s that I was really hard done by to be diagnosed younger.
I think offence can be found anywhere to be honest. Sometimes you have to look at the other reasons for things and be realistic about it.

It pis&es me off totally. comments like that usually come from my mum who just throws them at me whenever I call her with any updates…she lives 100 miles away and doesn’t give a sh+t!! Sorry for rant but really depressed with the lack of sensible support…humpf…
Reading this thread makes me both laugh and cry!
Love the comment about cutting articles out! I was having a chat last night on the phone to my Mum (they live 75 miles away and celebrated their 48th Wedding anniversary) when she mentioned a health food shop local to her who the owner has MS and writes articles on healthy eating in the local paper. This weeks was on MS and what to eat, so she has cut it out and is sending it to me! Just in case I am not looking after my health!
Mothers mean well and sometimes they want to worry over someone!
The DWP removed the Care component of my DLA because although I’m worse than I was, if I go at my own speed I can cope! My mother-in-law also thinks I should spend my time pottering in the garden and is surprised when I say I don’t have the balance to get outside or to the car. She also know lots of people who claim all sorts of benefits and assumes I’m rolling in dosh. Took 10 months to get an OT to come out and do an assessment, which completely wiped me out, much to their surprise. Some people have absolutely no idea about MS. They think being at home all the time is like having a day off work - you can get all those jobs done etc. Yeah, right.
