How to get steroids?

Hi everyone,

been a while since I posted as I moved to Canada a couple years ago. But am back visiting my husbands family for a month. Unfortunately, despite doing really well the past few years, I am now having an attack, mid holiday. Hurrah.

Any advice on how I might go about getting some steroids? is this something I could get by going into an AandE or is the dosage so high that it is only something a neurologist gives? Any advice would be most appreciated!

many thanks from a stressed out Canuck x

I would suggest you try the A&E, they should have a neurologist on call.

You may have a long wait, but it would be worth it.

Hope you get what you need.

Maybe contact your neurologist back home in Canada and ask them to fax a local GP with a request to issue you with a prescription for steroids? Chances are you’ll have to pay for a private prescription rather than get a prescription on the NHS but you should be able to see an NHS GP as a visitor. Perhaps start out by phoning a local surgery and explaining the situation to them, see if they agree that it’s possible. Most GP surgeries are able to issue a script for high dose steroids once they have been given the OK by a neurologist or MS nurse so I wouldn’t have thought it would be any different for you. Obviously they would also have to check your urine to ensure you don’t have an infection (I mention this because it’s something that my local surgery hasn’t quite got their heads around doing and it’s a very bad idea to take high dose steroids with a pre existing UTI!)
