Hi all I just did my 6th avonex shot with the pen and I knew something was wrong because it’s the first time it hurt. When I pulled out the needle it bled a lot! It still hurts. Is this normal? Just feel a bit concerned. Thanks Zoe
I was on Avonex for years and found that this happened to me occasionally. Unfortunately there is no way of telling for sure whether you have picked a good spot or a bad one, and the occasionaly bad one does bleed a bit, but no worse than that - I don’t think it is dangerous or a sign of bad technique or anything. So all I would say is, don’t be downhearted - with a bit of luck you will be lucky much, much more often than you are unlucky!

Had just the same as you 4 weeks ago. Tried getting hold of the ms nurse no luck, so rang the helpline number with the avonex pen. They were brilliant and very understanding. Their suggestion was to either contact GP to check it out or try putting a cool pack on the area you’re going to inject to take the veins lower and hopefully miss them. So far so good!! I’ve done this in the past. I was told not to worry by my MS Nurse. She said it can happen from time to time.
