Hill walkers challenge for MS Soc -10 in 10

Hello!

On Saturday I took part in the “10 in 10” fell walking challenge in the Lake District to celebrate my wellness in my 10th year of having MS. The event (10 Lake District peaks over 16+miles and over 2000m ascent) is put on annually specifically to raise money for the MS Society. It’s run by a local couple Yvonne and Duncan Booth who are MS fund raising heros (Duncan has MS himself).

All funds raised this year are going to the remylination research project.

Anyway - the event was amazing. Properly beautiful views, amazing support and camaraderie all the way round and a party in the pub for the end.

I know fell walking isn’t something all of us can do (or enjoy doing if we can!) but I wanted to give the event a little shout out. If there are any other hill walkers out there looking for a challenge and wanting to do something to raise money for the MS Soc I 100% recommend!

In addition to the “10 in 10” challenge there is a scaled “5 in 5” challenge for those looking for a shorter route and a “Family 5 in 5” which is even more accessible (although still has some pretty big climbs!). There is also a crazy “No Cure Always Hope” ultra marathon version which is way way way beyond me!

well done to you. I love walking but not fit enough for this. Around 8 miles is my limit.

Well done and nice to see your photos. I used to walk every year in the Lakes but alas it’s not possible for me anymore ( similarly for ‘Munro bagging ‘ in Scotland).

Is that Catbells or Causey Pike in one of your photos and possibly steep sided Wasdale in the other ( although I can’t work out what the Lake in the distance would be ) ?

Thanks - I’d be up for this.

Is it an annual thing?

Great work - well done!

Good spot! Route started (and finished) at the Swinside Inn and then went up Causey Pike and then followed the ridge along Scar Crag, Sail, Crag Hill, Wandrope and Whiteless Pike before dropping into Buttermere where it then climbed up High Snockrigg, Robinson, Dale Head, High Spy and Maiden Moore before dropping down the side of Catbells back to the Swinside. So good chunks of the Coledale Round and the Newlands Round.

We are very new to exploring the Lake District. My husband did a little bit with his family as a child and we did a short visit about ten years ago but we had a week in the Newlands Valley last year and loved it - so when I discovered the 10 in 10 challenge I was determined to give it a go. We’ve ended up turning it into a two week holiday! 6 days in and 17 Wainwrights down! Am determined to make the most of being able to do this whilst I can! :mountain::mountain::mountain::mountain:

Yes - on 20 Jun 2026.

It is a brilliantly organised event and an amazingly beautiful route

Absolutely right - carpe diem. Whatever we can do today, let’s make the most of it.

Thanks Katy, I think it was going up Causey Pike near the top where I experienced my first MS symptom although I didn’t know it at the time. Suddenly got vertigo and had to reverse back down on my bum. From different parts of the UK my sisters and I would meet up with our parents for a week or more of hill walking. We would base ourselves self catering in Keswick during May before the main summer hols and when Keswick was relatively quiet. Happy times. Hill walking, maybe a visit to the Theatre by the Lake and the optical illusion place

That’s quite the scramble to need to reverse down! I think I’d have needed to do that on my bum even without the vertigo.

It’s was just the last bit where I got vertigo. Wasn’t even at the top but something to do with the angles and horizon of adjacent hills I think. Managed to descend on my bum for maybe 50 - 80 feet until the vertigo went and was fine after that. These days I struggle with standing on a chair !
