Help to understand speech.

Hello, I am carer of a lady who has secondary progressive MS. She is currently experiencing excessive salivary secretions. She does take medication for this but some days are worse than others and on top of this me and her mother are struggling to understand what she is trying to tell us. Alot her communication comes out as an growling gargling type noise or is very quite or silent but lips are moving. My question is if anyone knows of any resources or advice that we could turn to,to help us to understand what she is trying to say we can imagine it is very frustrating for her as she can not express to us her needs so it is currently a guessing game with us. Asking questions that require just a yes or no answer or thumb up thumb down type thing. We have heard of some type of communication board but where would get hold of one of those?. Any advice would be great. Thankyou for reading. Stace x

There is a free MS helpline, number provided at the top of this page. I’m sure if you rang them they would be able to give you plenty of advice.

Good luck and best wishes to your patient.

Hi, it`s very good that you care so much to look for help here.

Our carers are worth their weight in gold.

There is an electronic machine, which will do what you`re asking. Have you googled anything? That usually brings up some kind of useful info.

I`ll have a go myself and get back.

Hello and thankyou all so much for your advice. We have come up with the idea of a story generator. I am currently just sticking relatable pictures to it. And recording the needs on there. so my client can press the buttons to communicate on the days that she unable to. Although we have given the patches for saliva another go and these seem to be helping a little so fingers crossed. Thankyou all again so much
