help - bladder

i still haven’t managed to self catheterise.

the nurse at the bowel and bladder clinic fitted me in as an emergency between appointments on friday.

i was sure i could manage once i’d seen her do it but that bloody urethra hides as soon as i start looking for it.

i rang my gp surgery to see if the practice nurse could do it but i was told that i really ought to go back to the bladder clinic.

now the bladder clinic is at the far side of bolton and the traffic can be a nightmare.

should i ring district nurses who are only 3 miles away?

i’m getting stressed and annoyed with myself. and that urethra of mine is worse than where’s wally!

anyway i’ll start ringing round to see who will do it.

just venting really and hoping for some sympathy.

has anyone else had trouble finding it?

carole (with legs crossed) x

hi hun, i found the secrect is not looking for it! Just do it by feel, that’s what i have always done and have had very problems inserting it. It’s just like inserting a tampon, except it’s the other hole lol. Hope this helps. if it doesn’t, pm me for more tips, love Bex xxx

hi bex

i just cant find the other hole!

i really think we should be taught all about our orifices at school.

double maths, history and a session on my orifices this morning?

or maybe a word with our creator asking for some luminous signs!

i’m rambling again

Carole, Do you think that maybe it would help to call up a diagram on Google, in order to differentiate between the various ‘holes’? If not, I am happy to describe the anatomy concerned in more detail on a pm for you. Let me know! Teresa xx

Hi,

I was told to do it lieing down as it’s easier. I only started ISC a month or so back and I still can’t do it any other way!

I lie on my bed with a mirror between my legs and a jug at the ready. I assume as it becomes 2nd nature I’ll progress to the bathroom. Luckily I only need to do it once a day at the moment!

Hope that helps!

Hiya Carole

Gosh! Still having problems? I know I’m a bloke but I had my concerns with this process to my ‘bladder’ nurse. Which were: Balance problems, less sensitive finger tips and to the ‘other bits.’ Oh and good old double vision! She done the ‘process’ on me first and wanted me to try and do the ISC procedure at the next appointment. I suppose she was trying to build my confidence and to make sure I was doing it right with less infection chance. Didn’t you get this opportunity to demonstrate under supervision until they were happy you will be ok?

Unfortunately, she gave me an infection (my first time) and shattered my confidence so I will see what happens next in January. I am border line but they are monitoring me.

I don’t know it’s the old ‘round hole/square peg’ problem all over again with us MS folks. LOL!

Marty

marty - no i didnt get to practice under supervision and thats what i need.

teresa - a pm would be helpful

thanks to all who replied x

Carol, did the bladder nurse give you some samples of catheters to try with ? I found that I couldn’t control the long, slippery ones but when I tried with the small one (Speedicath compact) that I am usually quite accurate! I still found it hard at the beginning and still do struggle at times but it is getting easier. Like Tree I also Googled for a diagram and that did help as its not somewhere I have had to find before !! My bladder nurse suggested balancing a mirror on the edge of the toilet whilst searching for the elusive ‘hole’ when standing with one foot on a small stool! God knows how she expected anyone with ms to do that, I tried it once and lost the mirror down the loo and ended up in a heap on the floor! Hope you succeed soon x

if you need anymore help and advice hun, please feel free to pm me, love Bex xxx
