Flu and a chest infection - double whammy!

Well the title says it all I have got the flu and a chest infection! And the irony is I’ve got the flu jab booked in for a weeks time! First time I’ve had flu in a long time and its knocked me for six! Please everyone get your flu jabs as the flu is horrendous and affects symptoms horribly! I’m just annoyed that my jab wasn’t sooner!

affects symptoms …

It was this specific double whammy that caused my immune system to malfunction in the first place - about this time last year.

I’m so sorry Karina. You must feel dreadful. I hope you’ve got someone who can look after you. Plenty of fluids and painkillers when needed! Keep warm and take care, Teresa xx

Tpath - I got a virus which triggered mine all of at the start of the year - nothing in my previous history just literally hit me like a bolt of lightening! Thanks Teresa I’m on antibiotics for the chest infection as its affecting my breathing pretty badly and setting off asthma. My dad comes home tomorrow night so then I can fully rest up! Had to go out and walk the dogs this morning in the snow - got back and did an hour of work and then just couldn’t do anymore! Been sitting on the sofa most of the day no energy to do anything and not really able to keep much food or drink down. I’m absolutely exhausted and what makes it worse is I can sleep and my dizziness has cranked up about 10 gears!

Hi Karina,

It’s a bugger. I got a really bad cold a couple of weeks ago which increased my symptoms. My leg buckled from underneath me, which was really scary. Look after yourself.

Adrian x

Glad you Dad will come home to look after you tomorrow. Just snuggle in and don’t bother to move now. Look after yourself. Teresa xx

I’ve got my flu jab on the 18th - can I have the jab if I’m just getting over a bout of flu?

Sorry don’t know what happened here. xx

I would check with your GPs surgery - I’m not sure. Teresa xx

I’m slightly worried that if I get the flu - its going to cause it to kick off again.

you’d imagine I would go get the flu jab - but I have also read that even the flu jab can be enough to cause a relapse.

but… being a guy… I’m basically going to sit back, ignore and deal with it when it occurs!

Hope you feel better soon.

Hi TPATH, I think you are better off getting the flu jab than not. Flu can cause pneumonia and MSers to be very poorly. Many of us on here swear by it. Teresa xx

I would say Tpath that its definitely worth getting the flu jab - if I could rewind time I would’ve insisted on an earlier appointment as I wouldn’t wish this on anyone and as Teresa says its worth having it as not having it can cause even worse things

Sorry to hijack this post, hope you feel much better soon Karina. Is it the norm to get a flu jab every year after an MS dx? I’ve never had one, but in April I was dx’d with MS and asthma!!! (Asthma was an added bonus after they looked at sarcoidosis!). Should I get the jab? Is it too late on the season now? X

I’m wondering that too, Emma. I was diagnosed in late September but no-one has mentioned it to me. I was warned about chest infections and UTI’s but don’t know why or what the warning signs are.

Hi guys - it’s recommended to get the flu jab yearly with ms - the gp should be able to arrange it and its not too late to get the jab now. Most flu cases are reported between December and March

Thank you! Will have a word with my GP. X

That sounds horrible Karina :frowning: October at the latest for the flu jab next year for definite!!! For everyone else: the flu is more dangerous for MSers than the flu jab by a long way - it’s been studied a lot and it’s a consistent finding. Even if the flu doesn’t set off a relapse, it can send your symptoms nuts which makes it go from feeling like you’re dying to wishing you were dying! Not worth the risk of doing without the jab in my opinion. I hope you feel better soon Karina. Karen x
