Fist avonex shot done!

So proud of myself, had active nurse pop round and show me how to do it. I have watched the vids of how to set up the pen and inject. Three practice pens into a sponge I was ready to go. Set it up check the use by date, check needle is in and check to make sure solution is clear. Pressed the pen onto my leg, took a few seconds to push the button. I think i said “down in one”, and click. Expecting pain but nothing only pressure on my leg. Ten seconds later pull the needle out and I was done. So easy now I have done it. Will be easy next time.

I must admit i had bad chills and headache today. Reading how everyone deals with the side effects shows where i went wrong. I took pain killers after shot but missed my next two doses. My fault i know, will be better next time. Yay first shot done!!!

p.s

To brog64 i saw your post to me on the bbb thread. Took your advice and searched the forums for how people deal with side effects. I should have been more careful with the painkillers. Thanks

well done darren, had my 59th avonex jab last night (fri) and i can recal the first as a bit nervey to say the least, be sure not to press the pen to hard this i found i was doing for sometime and it resulted in small bruising. gd luck and i must say TOUCH WOOD im ive so far been relapse free… Tony…

Thanks all.

Didnt think i was nervous till i had the pen against my leg. yeah, i need to learn how not to press too hard and pull it out straight.

You’re welcome darren and Congratulations!!! on the first one being done. The first is always the worst

well done. you did better than me lol. I was on rebif, the first time i must have sat with my rebismart aginst me for 10mins before i got the balls together to push the buton the second time wasnt much better either for me. It did get better till we worked out my body dosnt like rebif so back to the drawing board

Thanks everyone. Putting the pen together reminded me of films where people take their guns apart and put them back together. Very strange, but its all done. Headache and chills didnt last too long. Must be a sign its working.

To Jms,

At first i wanted to use rebismart, it looks the least like a needle more like a gameboy. I know what you mean i did hesitate before pressing the button, and counting ten seconds with a needle in your leg is harder than i thought. Sorry rebif wasn,t for you are going onto other beta-ferons? or is beta-ferons the problem?

Well done! I’ve been using Avonex since July and the side effects are finally getting better! The first few times I was a bit nervous but now it’s just part of my routine on a Wednesday. I’ve learnt which parts of my thighs hurt more than others and try to avoid those.

My thoughts are, that if using Avonex or any other interferon reduces, even slightly, the chances of a relapse then it’s worth the side effects etc.

Good luck

Lynne
