Electric Piano Interior Design Inspiration

We are doing a bit of home re-modelling and building quite a bit of in-built furniture - bookcases, a bench for the dining table, TV/media wall and shelves. I need to fit an electric piano in. We currently have a cheap slab keyboard, but it will be replaced with a ‘console’ style - maybe the Kawai CA79 - but not completely decided.

We are trying to make the most of space, and but for the piano, I wouldn’t otherwise be considering any areas with floor-to-ceiling bare wall. I’d be planning some sort of cuboard, sideboard, bookcase, floating shelf variation in most areas. However, most pictures that I see of electric pianos are pretty minimalist - the piano is the feature, often with a bare wall.

I basically want the opposite. I’m thinking:

  • Piano flanked with side-boards, same height as keys (or maybe rear or console) either side. Maybe a shelf or two running across the wall above.
  • A ‘horse-shoe’ of a sideboard, with the piano in the gap, then some ‘stuff’ on the wall above.

Clearly the possibilities are endless. I was wondering if anyone had any pics of their own set-up - either because they like it, or because they’d change something. Or pics of interesting set-ups online.

I like the idea of a “horseshoe”. I don’t like bare wall space, and if you build around the piano it’ll look more like it belongs to the room rather than just another piece of furniture taking up space.

The kawai are nice looking pianos, as well as lovely to play. It will look good where ever you put it!

I’ve got a ‘slab’ Yamaha digital piano in my study. It just manages to slot in in front of the window and radiator. The only place it can go!

I’ve got an upright piano in my living room (a wonderful sounding and good-looking 1963 Grotrian Steinweg Studio in teak - very 1960s Scandinavian minimalist look). Again only one place it can go due to radiators, fireplace etc. It is free standing, and likes to be the centre of attention. It does however live under a blanket most of the time to stop the wood getting faded by the sun! Probably not quite as good sounding as it should be as it is well over-due for a tune. It does hold its tune really well though. Whenever I think it is just about safe to get the tuner around, Covid takes off again!

Also in my living room I have my ‘travel’ Roland RD64 which actually lives in its case and sits on the trestle stands. I bought that one when I was working away from home alot and wanted to do something in the evenings when staying in a hotel rather than just watch television. It also goes on holiday with me, whenever possible. I’m wanting to get a small camper van, and it will need to fit in that too! That might be tricky.

I’m going to have to move house in the not too distant future and the house will have to fit my pianos!
