Hi,
Some time ago I wrote on here about tooth loss. My vitamin D and calcium levels are very low, but slowly, since diagnosis (PPMS) in 2009, my teeth have become unstable and I am losing them (have lost 5 already, with another one on the verge of going). They loosen and drop out like plums. (I do not have gum disease).
I am wondering whether anyone has had dental implants. I have read the information the company provide, and am very tempted to go down this route as opposed to having traditional dentures, but the article I read states that it is not suitable for ‘some types of chronic disease’. Does that include us? Although you are assessed beforehand, I would like to hear from anyone on this site who has experience of this.
I would be very interested in your views. Thank you.
Hi, I haven’t got implants but never heard that they are no good for people with MS. MS can cause gum problems… I always have infected gums and an article a few years ago said that MS can cause gum problems, but as yours aren’t infected I should think it will be ok. I think that was from the first study into MS and dental problems. Try posting on Everyday Living where there’s a much bigger group and someone may have implants. Lots of us take high Vit D3 supplements… my neuro recommended it. You can’t get the really high dose on NHS but you can buy them on Amazon from Healthy Origins. 5,000 iu (international units) for about a tenner… a year’s supply. Wish you luck with the implants, Pat xx
Thanks Pat,
I forgot to mention, I am taking Vit D supplements too - I wait until Holland and Barratt have their ‘penny sales’ and then buy enough to last a year! Costs about the same as Amazon.
Will post on here what the dental bods say.
Take care. xx
I am prescribed Vit D by my doctor and they are 20,000 IU. I take it I am lucky to have got these.
Yes you are Ricksmom… but 20,000 iu is very high. Please make sure you get tested regularly… people think that you cannot get toxic dose of Vit D3… but that is a myth. A woman on here had increase of symptoms and when they tested her she had levels way too high. (toxic dose gives symptoms similar to MS). Your GP should test you at least once a year… on dose you are on I would ask for test twice yearly. Pat xx
Thanks Pat, I have an appointment next week with my doctor so I’ll mention it. I only take two a month but when I was first given them I had to take 19 on the first day, yeah 19, so must have needed them.
Ah only two a month… you’ll be fine then. I thought you meant one a day. Lots of us take the 5,000 iu daily. No need to be tested in that case… you might think about going up to the 5,000 a day. Pat xx
PS… yes 19!!! You must have been seriously low!!! Pxx
