Backwash at the hairdresser

Now retired - but l was a hairdresser. We always gave clients a choice of a back wash or a forward wash. But even at a backwash basin - you can still stand and bend forward over it. l never liked the backwash - it was purgatory to me - even with the cushioned collar fitted to the hard porcelain.

l know the backwash - meant the clients ‘make-up’ was not effected too much - but a front wash l found got the hair rinsed better - especially with perming or tinting. Very hard to get the products rinsed off properly at the nape of the neck with a backwash.

We have read about the ‘axis’ joint in our necks - which many people think is the cause of lots of our mobility problems. l think there is videos on youtube about it.

Just chuckling to myself here thinking about backwashes. When I was 14 I had a job as a Saturday shampoo girl in a local hairdresser. I was useless - lasted two Saturdays. I seemed to be soaking the clients even though it was a backwash ! And even worse, a lot of them knew my mother so it was very embarrassing!

Hi, I now go to a stylist who has a front wash. I am ok in my wheelchair, but the sitting forward isnt that esasy as i have no core strength, plus i dont like squashing my spc. My carer helps by gently keeping me over the basin.

Prior to this I used a back wash but sitting facing it. They had to wrap me, my chair and everything around me in bin liners!

There were pools of water all around me.

Better now.
