Just seen ms nurse gotta decide on what dmd im going to start as i havent been on anything before shes suggested avonex does anyone take this whats it like? It says injection into muscle is it really painful? I had steroid injections into leg muscle while pregnant for babies lungs and it was so painful for ages is it going to be like that?
Do the injections make u ill everytime you do them im confused advice on which medication to start on would be appreciated x
Some people experience side effects, in varying degrees. Not really anyway to know how any drug will affect you until you start. If it doesn’t work for you for whatever reason you can always change to something else. The main thing is to take something to slow the ms down a bit.
I agree with Anon. The important thing is to start something - if you find that your first choice does not suit, you can switch.
I did well on Avonex for a number of years and found it convenient and very little trouble. Only once a week, and no site reactions. (Site reactions sound trivial, but they can be a real nuisance with the sub-cut injectables, and one of the good things about Avonex is that the IM injection does not cause them.) Injecting was never my favourite moment of the week, but never worse than a wee bit uncomfortable. Nothing whatever like a steroid injection! Not at all - I wouldn’t have put up with that every week at any price!

Ok thankyou makes me feel a bit better x
So it doesnt necessarily mean everytime i have a injection ill be ill? I read on the internet people inject on a friday evening so they have the weekend to recover
Hello, I always take my injection out of the fridge 30 mins before and take paracetamol which helps. My first injection saw the worst of the side effects, after that it has settled down to very manageable I haven’t regretted starting Avonex but as the others have said, you can always change if it doesn’t suit. Hi Cat, I’ve been taking Avonex for 10 years and still mobile which my Neuro thinks is down to the avonex… who knows!
I inject at night, take a couple of paracetamol and go to bed. When I get up the next morning I will take another couple of paracetamol after breakfast. Depending on how my day goes I may need a couple later on but not always. But you’ll work out your own routine.
As everyone has said if it’s not for you there are others out there but it may just be the one.
Hope it goes well.

I’ve just chosen Avonex because it was only once a week with the least injection reactions. I hate needles but I hate relapses more!

Hi, ive been on avonex 2 yrs now and in my opinion a dmd which is only once a week, with only my first two/three jabs giving me very mild flu like symptoms but as stated nothing a couple of paracetomol wont sort out!! and touch wood ive been relapse free since starting avonex. gd luck with whatever you choose. tc (Tony).
Thanks i chose avonex hopefully it goes ok c
Started avonex a month ago. Injection pain and the fluey symptoms have been fine - think I was more worried about them than I needed to be. Only really had flu the first week and the injector pen makes injecting pretty easy.
