I have resisted asking for help in the past - stupid idea of ‘I can get by…’ but, pain/spasms are just unbearable and I am not getting any sleep which, in turn is causing other problems. So, what does anyone suggest? I am currently taking Gabapentin [400 mg] [at night] for pain. Amantadine [200mg] for fatigue. I did try Baclofen [a few years ago] and this did not seem to do much - to be fair, I did not try this for long or a strong dose - 20mg [throughout the day].
I’m probably being stupid but am scared of taking anything else as I know this stupid disease will probably get worse and if I start taking too many drugs then what about the future?? Told you I was being stupid.
By the way - I have had MS for 24 years- am now sp and am a full time wheelie - legs are crap and fatigue is also an issue.
Hi anon. Know how you feel about the drugs but you still have plenty og room for manouver. I had very bad muscle spasms in my legs. I got it well improved with 20mg baclofen three times daily. Too high a dose can cause weakness.I was told that I could up the dose if needed but like you I am reluctant. I also take 1800mg per day of gabapentin. I am also SP for the past six years and RR for sixteen years before that. I also try not to have steroid unless absolutely necessary in case I really need them in the future
Hi, I am really new to all this, I was only dx in June. I am already on 300mg x 3 times a day of gabapentin I am not on any other drugs yet but from what I can gather 900mg a day of gabapentin is quite a common dose and can go up a lot higher. Maybe you could ask about changing your dosage. I know what you mean about not taking to much of a drug but if you are in pain it sounds like it is not working and needs reviewing in some way. Hope you feel able to talk to your doctor about it and that this helps a bit. Mish x
Hi - thanks Mary and MIsh for your advice. After reading your replies and thinking this through, the dosages I am on are quite low. I will speak to my GP. I certainly can’t have any more sleepless nights.
You could try amitriptyline which is a nerve pain med but has the wonderful ability to knock you out for the night.
You have to play around to find a dose that suits, give it time to get in your system and your system time to get used to it but well worth sticking with it.
If you take it 12 hours before you need to function in the morning once used to it it will not make you feel drugged up the following day.
hi. i take gabapentin,300mg three times a day. i also take quinine fo mucle cramp/spasam,which helps. i also take 50 mg of amytriptaline a night, and it does help with pain, not only at night when you take it,but during the day. i have tizanadine to help also. i was diagnosed in 98,but its only recent years ive been on gabapentin. i helps, but i feel my dose may need upping, and admittidly ill leave it as long as i can put up with it!
