uhthoff's phenomenon (a big whinge)

hi all

im in the mood for a good old whinge so here goes…

i saw eye specialist last week and have finally been given a script to get prisms fitted into my reading glasses to help with double vision, this has taken 10 months. the doc didnt know if i will have to pay any extra for this doing.

second whinge…i asked why the prisms dont help with the millions of dots i have in my vision. at that point she flicked through my notes from another eye doc at same hospital then said you have uhthoff’s phenomenom, i have no idea what that is but youve got it! nobody told me. she then dismissed me from clinic and has referred me back to my doc.

my last whinge… i had some extra hand rails fitted upstairs last week and i thought what a good job the housing association had done… until my carer discovered today that the stupid idiot has drilled right through into the newly decorated spare bedroom and behind the bathroom door! its no wonder he did such a good vac before he left.

im getting rather peee’d off now.

Hi,

Uhthoff’s Phenomenon is nothing directly to do with your eyes, which is probably why your eye specialist hadn’t encountered it before.

All it means is that, like many people with MS, your symptoms (including visual symptoms, presumably) tend to get worse when you are hot.

So it’s not some sinister new development that had been kept from you. It’s just the medical term for something you’d probably already noticed.

Can’t help much with the other stuff, sorry. I do know special lenses (including prisms) can’t correct any sight defect that’s caused by damage to the optic nerve itself. They can only compensate for problems at the front of the eye, with focusing. If your brain can’t actually receive or process all of the information coming from the eye, then sticking a different lense in front of it won’t make any difference. It’s a bit like if your telly is broken, getting a better aerial won’t fix it.

Workmen - I just dread having them to the house, full stop, so you’re not alone there. There must be some decent ones around, but why do I always seem to end up with Bodgit & Co?

T.

[/quote] Hello Zelda good to see you.

I get uhtoff’s a lot when hot after a shower, bath, exersion etc: I have a dx of optic neuritis and the opthomologist explained this phenomenom to me in the early days of dx(with optic neuritis) and so was lucky…just get on with it now as and when it happens as opposed to being scared out of my wits wondering what is going on.

Sorry the workmen left such a mess…and a hole in the wall…makes you wonder what they are thinking of doesnt it.

I hope all is well otherwise.take care. xx Maria

Hi Zelda,

George

cant understand why they took so long with your eyes the doc done my glasses there and then

Hi, I noticed at the end of your reply to Zelda re poor workmen.well the guys who installed my ceiling (actually it isn`t attached to the ceiling, but the walls) made absolutley no mess whatsoever. We found not a speck of dust, nor a scraped bit of paintowrk anywhere.

So, yeh, there are still some good workmen pout there!
