tysabri and antibiotics

Hello all you lovely folk and I hope you are as well as can be.

Another wee question if you guys don’t mind.

I had a wee fall in the shower yesterday bruising my leg ( I thought).

This morning it was black and very swollen so my husband took me to the minor injuries where they x-rayed me. thankfully no breaks however I have an infected haematoma( correct spelling I hope)

They were going to admit me initially but decided on antibiotic dressing and a course of tablets to take.

I am due to get my tysabri infusion on Monday but was wondering if it will go ahead due to me being on antibiotics.

Thanks for any help you can give

Much love

Mary x

I’m sorry to hear about your fall, and now the infection. I would recommend contacting your ms team regarding this. But I do believe it’s not recommended to be on antibiotics the same time as an infusion as it’ll weaken the immune system too much making you more susceptible to illness. That’s the general rule for kesimpta and ocrevus, and I believe it falls under a similar category.

animali.

Thank you for your reply. I am due at 8.30 in the morning and kinda thought they would maybe just send me home until antibiotics are finished.

I will let you know.

Thanks again

Much love, Maryx

I’m very sorry that you hit the deck, Mary. That’s a horrible thing to happen.

I don’t know the answer to your question, but I must admit I would be a bit surprised if they didn’t want to proceed with the infusion. in any case, if they do want to delay it, I’m sure they’ll want to book you in as soon as possible after your course of antibiotics is finished.

Thanks so much for you reply Alison.

I will find out in the morning and will let you know

How did you get on this morning, did they let you get the infusion or not?

Hope you got on ok, and hope the antibiotics are starting to ease your symptoms.

Take care Mary x

Hi Mary

I was due to start Kesimpta a few months back but my pre blood tests showed latent TB. I have had to go on a course of antibiotics for 3 months and so my neurologist would not allow me to start any immune suppression DMT therefore I have had to go on Capxone in the mean time as this apparently works differently.

Not sure if this helps you but it may have some relevance.

Best of luck

Dave

Thank you all for your very kind replies.

I got my treatment today and also seen my GP and practice nurse who changed my dressing and said things are healing nicely.

I think I am a bit confidence shattered by the fall but they have all said hopefully a blip.

I have to call orthopaedics regarding the house and if I need aids etc.

Thanks again everyone.

You are the best

Good to hear that you got your treatment and that your leg is healing nicely. I had a rail fitted in my bath and another fitted beside the toilet and I have to say that they give me so much security and confidence on days that I’m not feeling 100%. I really didn’t want them at first but now I accept that they are for my own benefit.

Hope you continue to improve.

Thanks Morag. I know I have to be sensible and accept aids to keep me safe. I realise now (at last) not to be so determined or stubborn as my hubbie says , with love of course.

Thanks again

I was of the same mind, determined that I could manage things. Must be these stubborn genes.

Well said. The dreary paraphernalia of infirmity are no one’s first choice, but they can stop one’s world from shrinking any faster than it has to.

Thank you so much for your very kind replies as ever.

You both are so right and I will be less determined/stubborn and take any help that the OT recommends

I have just made a self referral to the OT department.

I will continue to let you know how things are.

Hello to you all.

Just to let you all know that I am getting there slowly but surely.

Bruising and swelling has eased on my leg/foot and I think I am getting a bit stronger. Pain from going down but its more than likely pulled muscles.

I am thinking of getting a stairlift for days when I am a bit wobbly. Have any of you got one?

I am maybe being overcautious and have contacted the OT to ask advice.

Hope you are all well

I think getting professional advice is a very good idea.

Personally I’m going to put off a stairlift for as long as I can because getting up and down those stars if one can do it safely (if slowly!) is such an important part of staying mobile. For as long as I can do stairs safely I’ll do stairs. The day I can’t, I’ll order a stairlift like a shot.

I feel exactly the same way. In fact the physio at the rehab place I was initially treated at said I was too young to be thinking about a stairlift but maybe that was her way of getting me working on the stairs being absolutely determined that I would manage on them, I had to get a second bannister fitted mind you. Another thing I resisted until I realised I absolutely couldn’t do without it. I would definitely get one if my mobility deteriorated though.

Thank you so much ladies

I have always regarded your advice so vey highly and what you have both said is exactly how I feel. The MS physio said to me before to continue doing the stairs as long as I can. I am awaiting the OT’s getting in touch and will take their advice on board.

My leg is healing well and one more new dressing should suffice.

My back is really sore but I do think this is a result of the fall last week and no pain no gain, hopefully it is healing and I will get back to my baseline soon.

Thanks again girls, you truly are the best

io said the very same about continuing with the stairs as long as I can.

Dear Mary, that is great news that your leg continues to heal well. I hope that your back soon recovers too. Falling over is so horrid and can take a bit of recovering from. I did it about a year ago, and it’s hard work getting both the function and the confidence back.

Thank you so much. You are so right, confidence has been shaken but it will get better as time goes by. Keep well andthank you for being there, as always.
