I’ve heard this said a lot too, but for me it’s not the case at all. Can just take it with a glass of water. Never used high fat, protein at all. Can only think it’s a choice made by others. Says on the leaflet with food, or a glass of water.
There seems to be a lot of poor information out there.
I note on the advice sheet with the drug that it can be taken with or without food. For me, i think the idea of taking it on an empty stomach is crazy. But then you have just a glass of water?
My concern is, that people are actually being dissuaded from a certain DMD or any DMD at all, due to such constraints and conditions, which in the real world simply do not matter.
For me… i have a very low, almost zero fat diet. My protein levels ar pretty high and so too no doubt are my gluten levels. The take home message therefore is, we are all different. Much like the variation in the disease symptoms, the potential for side effects is virtually unpredictable.
Incidentally, to reduce risk of a flushing episode, take an aspirin 30 minutes before dose one.
And if you don’t like fry ups… who cares? Do not even worry about breakfast if you have neither the time nor the appetite. Save dose one for lunch time!
The advice for consuming a specific type of food has not been supported by anyone i have heard from, when taking Tecfidera in the real world.
What does seem to be apparent, for most people, is that side effects such as flushing and stomach cramps are greatly reduced, if tecfidera is taken on a full stomach.
The prevailing advice is: if you eat four weetabix for a meal, take your tecfidera once you have eaten three of them.
The other nugget of advice i would always recommend to someone taking up the Tecfidera habit, is to get a supply of the 120mg capsules for the foreseeable future. Your MS nurse no doubt advised that you can go onto full dose after a week or two. Again, real world experience suggests that this is too much too soon.
If you want to find out more, just ask. There are many well experienced Tecfiderians in here!
Paulo’s advice is good on the Tec. I’ve been on it about 18months and for me the widely described side effects happen occasionally, although now mainly intermittent flushing.
Theirs a really good closed Facebook group which many of us are members of, you can get a lot of support and advice there from the end users.
