Hi I was dx a few months ago now and have been feeling rotten for the last few weeks with all previous symptoms making a appearance, after talking to my ms nurse she and the ms spec has decided I need steroids but the have prescribed me a dose of 500 mg per day! This seems so high and even the pharmacist checked to see if this is right which apparently it’s the new guidelines! My question is has anyone else took this dose of steroids before and how did they affect you? Oh I will be taking for 5 days… Thanks for reading and any advice would be much appreciated:) Carla xx
Hi Carla,
I have recently taken a 500mg dose of methylprednisolone (medrone) over 5 days. I didn’t really get any side effects when taking them, except making me feel wide awake all the time - I hardly slept when taking them, but felt exhausted afterwards. I also put on weight, as they made me hungry all the time, as soon as I stopped them, I went back to my normal weight after a week. The other side effects I had after were spots, aching all over, skin felt sensitive, salty taste in mouth and I was also quite emotional, but that was probably down to the aching and sensitive skin, as it hurt whatever I did
They didn’t work instantly for me, but I have improved a lot, just very slowly. My neuro said they stay in your body and continue to work for 8 weeks.

500mg is the norm for an MS relapse so don’t worry.
I hope they work for you

Thank you both for your comments it’s really helpful to know the side effects, my dose is 500 mg per day which would mean 2500 mg over the 5 days can I just ask that yours was the same. I know I sound silly but I hate taking tablets and these seem high, I hope yours are the same then I will just get on with it:) Oh they are methylprednisolone Thanks again and Karen fingers crossed they work I feel so crappy Carla x
The dose I had of the same tablets was 500mg a day for five days the same as you have been prescribed.

Hi Carla,
Sorry, I wasn’t clear in my first post! Yes, my dose was 500mg of methylprednisolone per day for 5 days. Mine were in 100mg tablets, but I had to take 5 at once, in the morning. I was apprehensive about taking them, but like you, I felt so crappy, I didn’t have much choice.
I hope they work for you and don’t forget they continue working long after you have stopped taking them. It was hard for me to see any improvement at the time, even after 2 weeks, I was convinced they hadn’t helped at all, but when I looked back and remembered what I was like before the steroids, I realised they were helping! It might help to write down how you’re feeling now? I think that would have helped me, as it’s hard to remember how we felt, once we are feeling better.

Ahhh thank you both, feel better now knowing this Fizzy, thanks for telling me you took them all in one go as I was trying to figure out how I was going to fit them all in the day, I have taken one this morning so I think I will just take the remaining four altogether at 1 pm then take the whole 5 of them tomorrow morning and so on. Glad they made a difference to you and what a good idea writing down how I feel like now then I can compare. THANKS Carla x
Carla,
That’s exactly what I did, as I wasn’t sure whether to take them all at once or after every meal! I took one the first morning, then asked at the chemist how I should take them and took the rest after lunch…I didn’t get to sleep until 5am the first night! Take the rest as early as you can in the morning and you should get to sleep a bit earlier.
