I know I should have gone through with it, I started having it done, anasethic in the back it didnt even hurt that much but i came over all dizzy, started sweating and felt as if i was going to faint! They got me to lay down and my blood pressure had dropped dramatically, the doctor said he would come back after his next patient and i was too rest up… I just lay there thinking… NO im not going throught with it anymore, so I didnt, I said NO and left. My neuro is going to be mad at me, I know he will but I just couldnt finish it, what do you guys think?

Are you OK normally with needles?
My friend is a phlebotomist and she said she had a little lad faint on her the other day and then began fitting. He was not epileptic. He was OK as she was taking his blood but as she pulled the needle out he said “I’m going, I’m going” and passed out. We can’t help how we react. I’m not surprised you couldn’t go through with it after that. Can you go back another day when you are more prepared and ready for it maybe?
Sorry I can’t be more help but just wanted to say that it’s not easy having these tests done. I had a panic attack in the MRI scanner last week which was totally out of the blue for me as I didn’t even know I was claustrophobic. I had another done today with some diazepam, which helped , although I still didn’t like it at all. I’m fine with needles but I hate little tight tunnels!
We all act/react differently. It’s not wrong and if you’re neuro goes mad just tell him to get his arse in their and have it done! lol. Sorry, that wasn’t helpful either but it makes me cross sometimes when we are made to feel bad for something we cannot control. You may be surprised, he may be sympathetic?
Hi, I had a similar reaction last year to an anaesthetic for taking my tooth out, it’s a known thing, the dentist swung the chair so my head was below my feet and after a while I was ok. Maybe it was that rather than the panic? Did you eat before you went? Take care, Lucy x
Hey hey don’t worry your neuro is not going to be mad with you. I’m with midnight moon to try to go back another day when your more prepared. Can you take a friend to hold your hand? Take care Min xx
Could you get your GP to prescribe some diazepam or something that you could take beforehand. Just to relax you. As others have said, you also should have someone with you who knows you and can talk to you and help keep you calm. Its not your fault your body reacted like this, so your neuro cant be cross with you. But if this is a necessary test, then you need some help keeping your body/mind calm. Good luck to you and I wish you all the best xx
Thanks guys for all youre reassuring words, I dont know what came over me, its crazy im not scared of needles either, its how i reacted i suppose? It would have helped if i could have had someone with me but they wouldnt let anyone in at all? I will call the neuros secretary tomo and tell her i have not had it done and ask if i can still keep my appoinment with the neuro. Ive decided now that im not going to have it done either, its really put me off now and ive had everything else done that he wanted me to have done, like the MRI brain, spine etc and with contrast injection too, that wasnt nice being in that confined tunnel for 45mins either, so if he wont Dx without the LP im stumped? They will have to give a general if they want it done as there will be no doing it now!! I know of other people being Dx with MS without ever having had a LP done… so why does he need it anyway?
Chelle
My neuro wanted me to have a lp. Made the appointment but bottled it and didn’t go. Blooming neuro diagnosed me anyway!!! Something to do with having two mris and the most recent one showing new active lesion. Hugs Min xx
hi chelle
my first lp i was very similar to you and had to stop midway through
2nd one 3days later was much easier as i was on diazapam and new doc doing the lp…hardly felt a thing when it was done right
anyway i don’t think a general is allowed when doing lp
might be wrong but i think at the time i did say i wanted knocked out but they wouldn’t do it…was sept 2010…a long time ago now!
ask for something like diazapam and it will be over before you know it
take care and good luck
baz
I was diagnosed without lp this year.
Pip
Hi, I was diagnosed without LP as well.
So it’s not impossible. Just may take a bit longer, as they’ll want to make sure they’ve got really good other evidence.
NO medical process or procedure is compulsory - you shouldn’t be penalised or “ticked off” by your consultant for refusing something.
If it was a lifesaving operation or something, I could understand them counselling you that to decline was not in your best interests.
But this isn’t. It may or may not help towards diagnosis (it doesn’t always, as there’s no one, definitive test). There’s no other benefit to you, and it’s usually possible to diagnose without anyway. Most consultants prefer to have LP evidence, but the diagnostic criteria don’t say you have to have it!

Thanks guys its really good to hear that some of you have been supported by the neuro and he hasnt needed it, or just Dx without it anyway. Baz you were brave going through with a second attempt 3 days later!!
I did ring the sectutary today and she was very understanding and told me not to worry, that she would tell him and get back to me if there was a problem… She said if i didnt hear from her to just attend my appointment in July, so I will just have to wait and see if she comes back to me before then - I hope not! I really dont want to have this done now…
