can anyone tell me if the side effects of gabapentin tablets wear off as you’re taking them?
Took first tablet and felt like i was in a trance the next day…i work days, backs and nights and that one tablet is to be increased to three a night over time…cant see how i can function with them, felt really strange…work mates noticed too and i didnt feel alert enough to be at work
Hi I am on gabapentin and with all medication, it can effect people differently. I felt really tired and washed out when I started it but for me it only lasted a few weeks. Although having recently increased my dose at night I have noticed I am tired in mornings again, more than usual. I also started on rebif at same time as increase so it could equally be that. I think it takes a while to get into the system but for me it was worth it because it has helped with the pain symptoms. Hope it works for you but if not I there are other alternative medications but I am not sure what their side effects are. Mish x
I started taking 300mg back in May - was supposed to increase it but it made me too sleepy. So I still take 300mg at night [before bed] and will take an extra 100/200mg late afternoon - if pain is too bad - my consultant said it would be okay to do this.
For me took a couple of weeks for the side effects to wear off, I work in a school and couldn’t remember the alphabet. It’s all come back to me now! Would have also eaten my own arm, they made me starving hungry. Worth the temporary confusion and extra half a stone as they do work for me.
I am on 300mg, 300mg and 400mg a day (1000mg a day in total) with option to increase further. When I started though I took 100mg for three days, then 200mg for three days then 300mg for two weeks before increasing it by 100mg a week until I got upto full starting dose of 300mg x 3 times a day. Maybe speak to dr about introducing a bit slower if you are finding things difficult? Mish x
Thank you, Glad to hear theres a chance they’ll wear off, im not quite sure how i’ll get round the shifts though…i only took the one and stopped as i was too worried about the effects making me unable to work, i think i’ll have to have a talk with the neuro about timing and if i’ll be able to work while they settle down
My gp also suggested judging it before having a weekly increase and if necessary giving myself longer in between increases if I felt I needed to. I had my prescription in 100mg capsules not 300mg capsules, to allow me to do that.
Thats great mish, thank you…i didnt expect to feel quite as bad as i did and it really put me off, i need to be alert at work, people noticing and asking if i was ok wasnt good either as very few people know about my ms…i must’ve looked like i was on something ! its reassuring to hear there are ways around all this
Hi Iv been taking Gabapentin for about 8 years 600mg - 900 mg at night and a further 300 during the day if I need it and it stil zonks me out so very rarely take it during the day and recently its not helping with the pain, been prescribed tramadol untill I see the nero again in a couple of weeks for results of my MRI .
I used to take 6 - 8 x 300mg Gaba daily with other stuff. As the pain and the nerve damage are changing I now take 1 x 300mg as soon as I wake, then 2 x 100mg during the day.The moral of this “Me me me” is that less can be better.'Praps you could open the capsule and knock some of the powder out.You might get the same pain relief without as much wooziness.
Are you taking anything else which could be ‘ganging up’ on you with the Gaba? Try and find a dosage which suits you,but if you discuss this with anybody medical be wary of mentioning driving, and apply common sense. If DVLA ever found out…
I was started on it & after just one dose, I can’t remember now if I even got to the second one…I answered my front door & my legs just went & I damaged my ankles badly.
I also felt like the inside of my head was spinning while I was still, in short I felt very odd.
Thanks…definitely a variety of experiences! well i havent gotten past tablet one yet…as for driving; i’ve already got an unspoken ban on using the cars at work…is this a drug that would stop me driving altogether? Hazel i did feel very strange…im going to hold off on them until i speak to my gp or neuro for now.
I started on just 100mg a day 200 on day two etc until I now take 600mg three times a day, I didn’t have too many issues at all with side effects I think because I started so gradually. I am on my max dose now ( restricted due to kidney disease) and it has helped but not enough
