Foot drop splint

I suffer from foot drop, worse when tired. I have tried FES electronic system but found it very uncomfortable. Has anyone experience of an ankle splint? Do they help, and should I simply buy one from the internet or should I go to a physiotherapist?

I was given one by my physiotherapist at the time, they seem to be amazing at first but it wastes away the muscle then you start to become quite dependant on it, I wasn’t told any of this at first and now it’s a regret for me!

Hi John,

I have foot drop and the neurologist referred me to the hospital. I’ve got an appointment next week with the orthoptics department (think that’s what it’s called) to try a foot splint out. Only thing is I wear skirts and dresses so think I can only use it with trousers. Will go along and see what they can offer.

Zac, I’ll ask about muscle wastage , thanks for the tip.

Ive got one and mine helped greatly. Ive gone from a paralised foot and ankle to being able to move it better and control my foot better. When Im fatigued it gets worse because I need to concentrate on what my leg is doing.

I would recommend asking to see neuro physio who may be able to get you one, mine did, but then I learnt that ms society supplied the cost of such as nhs is cutting down on supplying such things.

best wishes - do try before you decide longer term. Ive found they can be hidden on the ankle and hardly noticeable on the shoe.

Hello all,

I have bad foot drop, cannot climb the stairs at home. Several years ago I discovered MUSMATE. Ingenious and I would recommend it. Look on my website for a review and thoughts. Put MUSMATE into the search bar or try this address http://www.aid4disabled.com/musmate/.

It does work

Hi all, I have recently had back surgery that didn’t go too well and due to lots of complications left me with foot drop in my right foot. Since September I have been wearing a splint its helped me enormously, I don’t wear it around the house bit always wear it when I go out. Does any one of you drive your car since having foot drop? I’ve looked into this and have been that I’m fine to drive although I have only driven around a car park to see how it felt. Thanks Deb

Thanks for all the advice. It’s such a performance going to hospitals etc so I have taken the plunge and ordered one online. Should arrive tomorrow. I’ll post with the result.

I have a foot brace called a “Foot-up”. They are available on the internet, but I got mine via community physio. My gp referred me to community physio who referred me to orthotics who provided it. I can get a replacement every twelve months, though I found that a bit too long to wait, so bought another online. I used to have FES. The foot up is more comfortable and easy to wear,

HI john, ive foot drop and after trying a multrude of diffrent supports etc i found a good, very good splint thats easy to put on/off from a company called footdropsolutions.co.uk. £40. works for me, gd luck Tony.

Just ordered a brace from footdropsolutions. Looks comfortable. Thanks, Tony.

hi john, no probs, hope it helps you as much as it has helped me… gd luck. Tony.

I have just ordered one from foot drop solutions too after reading these posts. I have have additional problem in that I cant flex my knee well in order to get good swing through so it may not work for me.
