'The researchers also determined that second-degree relatives such as aunts and their nieces or nephews were more likely to inherit the gene variant than first-degree relatives such as siblings or parents and children.
“It appears that the less the genetic sharing between individuals, the higher the interaction is between female sex and inheritance of the HLA gene variant,” said Orhun Kantarci, MD, of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and a member of the American Academy of Neurology, who wrote an editorial on the study. “These findings pave the way for future studies of these genes, hopefully to advance our understanding of inheritance of complex diseases such as MS.”’
I have an aunt with MS.
I’m generally confused at the moment. Had a couple of good days, (which is great!) but leaves me feeling stupid and embarrassed thinking there’s nothing wrong and I shouldn’t be making such a fuss. (Also frustrating as I’m having to chart input and output and my bladders been working okay for 4 days!)
I don’t know about the genetics bit, but I had a great week at the beginning of this month, and the main thing I’d say is chart it, but enjoy it: don’t let your worry detract from the pleasure of whatever time you get without the symptoms you’ve been having. If that’s then end of your troubles, shout it from the rooftops and celebrate!! If not, you’ll have had some respite and a real appreciation of what your normal feels like. My symptoms did all kick back in again, and it was that come down that really prompted me to go back to my doctor and tell her how bad things were usually. I’d not exchange those few great days for anything, though: I was on top of the world and proclaiming it a miracle… Although of course now I’ve had to put the old canonization plans on hold…!
Oh, and don’t feel too embarrassed about charting bladder stuff. I had Shigella and Giardia for a while and had to chart the 2s! What with that, inspecting the toilet for colours and textures and having to undergo various ‘probing’ tests , I got so used to it all that when I went for an internal cervical ultrasound, I suspect was rather unusually casual (!) about it. When it’s your lack of embarrassment that you suddently find yourself embarrassed about, then it’s time to worry…!
My Mothers, Brothers daughter (my cousin) hs been having tests for MS over the last 5 years too… I didn’t know until this weekend when I went to the Czech Republic to see her.
They don’t sound like they know what they are doing though and she is still waiting for a positive DX… from what she said to me we have the same symptoms so I am guessing if I get a + DX then she will have to push for more tests.
Does that mean someone in our Great Grandparentage had MS?
Thanks CC for encouragement and your story. Pins and needles back today but nothing too bad, enough to confirm though it’s definitely not positional and dont see how it can be anxiety as was very happily vacuuming and upright and hands at feet atsame time. I think I have to write some of these things for my own sanity as when everything is ok it’s easy to think I imagined it all. Great factsheet too, thanks Alison C
