diagnosis and offered treatment - age 70

Hello.

Diagnosed a couple of weeks ago, after symptoms lasting from December 2025, which improved with steroids. After lots of tests (MRIs, blood tests, lumbar puncture, PET scan, ) although blood tests, PET scan and lumbar puncture all “normal/negative”, but MRI showed lesions in spinal cord and brain. they have decided it is MS. I am 70.

I have been offered Mavenclad. Difficult decision, as everything is so unpredictable (progression of disease and medication side effects)

I would be interested to hear from anyone taking Mavenclad (orally), ( especially positive experiences! )- and also from anyone diagnosed so late in life, and their experiences with of without medication.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Hi @almcsingh I’m not on Mavenclad but it’s good to hear that older folk are being offered treatment!

Relative to your age I was a youngster when diagnosed in my early 50s

I was diagnosed at 62. Started with Tecfidera but lowered my lymphocytes to unacceptable levels so taken off.

Kicked up a fuss when no further treatment was forthcoming and finally offered Ocrevus Kesimpta or Mavenclad with a strong recommendation for Mavenclad. I chose Mavenclad because it is being trialed in Chariot for people denied treatment because of poor mobility. I was 69 at the time and have finished my second and final year of treatment.

I had no problems with treatment but the screening blood tests were very thorough. The biggest problem is working out how to get the pills out of the packaging!

That sounds encouraging! Thank you . Hope you are doing well.

Welcome, and thank you for sharing your story. Being diagnosed at 70 after such a long testing process must be a lot to take in. While I can’t speak specifically about Mavenclad from personal MS experience, many people find it helpful to focus on overall wellness alongside whatever treatment they choose. I’ve found the BetterMe work wellness program interesting because it combines guided physical activity, nutrition support, stress-management tools, mindfulness practices, and personalized health planning, which can help maintain daily energy and resilience. Whatever decision you make about Mavenclad, giving attention to physical and mental well-being, staying active within your limits, and building healthy routines can be valuable parts of the journey. Wishing you the very best as you consider your options and move forward.
