Hi all - Ive been on carbamazepine now for awhile and have been told to increase the number of times I take this to help reduce my symptoms. I have been on prolonged release 200mg twice daily and now take this 3-4 times daily. When I went to the pharmacy to get the prescription, the pharmacist said the prolonged release tablet is not correct seeing Im now taking this 3-4 times daily and has given me the regular tablets. .Im hoping this helps. Im wondering if anyone is on carbamazepine and what type? Many thanks Heather
hi hun,
i am also on tegratrol like you. ive never heard of this prolonged release tho and was wondering if you could tell me what that is plz?
Thnx Anna x
Hi Anna- the fact that you have not heard of the prolonged release tablets makes me think I should not have been on these from the start. They are designed to release a small amount of the drug over a period of time instead of the the whole tablet eg 200mg at once. Im no longer on the prolonged release adn taking them four times daily so hopefully they will help. Hope this makes sense Anna. Kind regards Heather
Hi,
I’m on tegretol prolonged release and for years took them just once a day (in the evening) because my pain was usually at bed time. I started getting pain in the afternoons so now I take them twice a day (400mg in the am 600mg in the pm)
I tried normal non release ones but found the side effects were grotty – dizzy and light headed. – it must have been the big hit of carbamzepine.

Hi Jane
Thanks for your reply. Im not sure what to do now.MS nurse off until first week in January now. and Ive started taking the regular 200mg 3-4 times daily. Not sure about the side effects as I have this awful cold, sore throat, head ache, etc. so would not even notice if there were worse side effects. The prolonged release ones didnt give me any side effects though. I would like to know if anyone else out there is on tegretol and strength and if they are prolonged release. Merry Christmas everyone… Heather
Hi Heather
I take carbamazapine.
Mine are normal release and I take 100mg in the morning and again in the afternoon and 200mg at night.
I can up the dose at anytime. especially when my trigeminal neuritis kicks in!
Ive not had any side effects so far from the drug.
Although, like you I am full of cold, so at the moment I am not taking it as I need the lemsips more!
Merry Christmas
Teri x
Hi Teri Glad to hear someone is on normal release tablets, The pharmacist spoke to my GP today and explained why I need the normal release and she agreed. We are all learning. Im on 200mg three times daily and can take four times daily if needed. It definitely helps the pain but so far not the jerking jumping movements in my arms and legs. I’ll keep taking for the 2 weeks and see how it goes. Hope your cold improves for Christmas Teri, mine is slowly going away. Merry Christmas, Heather
