Anti-coagulation medication and DMDs

I posted a while ago about pain in my calf; two GPs dismissed the possibility of it being a DVT, when lo and behold 15 days ago I ended up in A&E unable to breathe. Turned out I had bilateral pulmonary embolism, and was told I was lucky to be alive. I’ve been on heparin injections until today, and have been switched to Apixaban.

I’ve been on tecfidera for around 10 weeks, and the side effects had worn off. However, since starting the anti-coags, the side effects are awful - diarrhoea, reflux and stomach ache. Does anyone know if this makes sense? No-one knows how these drugs interact, and I can’t get any answers.

It’s a long shot but I wondered if anyone else had experienced anything similar?

  • Trust me ! I had similar problems only difference was my face on one side dropped.they rushed me in to hospital whether decided that it was a stroke.was put on blood thinners in April .long story cut…I am starting d m d in the February , and had asked my m s nurse if it would interfere with anything answer was no. Hope u get the answer you need.

Hi Sarah,

II only mention this; obviously it is not your problem but it is known as sticky-blood; mimics MS symptoms; causes lesions and the anti-coagulant medication given is heparin or Aspirin. http://www.aps-support.org.uk/
