Hi I am wondering if anyone else has problems with their ears in the same way I do, my ms nurse looked at me like I was crazy when I mentioned it to her! When I’m out and about and start to tire I start to yawn a lot and then I would lose my hearing in one or both ears, it feels a bit like swimmers ear in that before my hearing goes it gets echoey and then it feels blocked. When it first happened my gp told me I had retracted eardrums and gave me a nasal spray this cleared it up but now I find any time I’m feeling overly tired it happens. The spray always works but it’s really frustrating being out with friends and not being able to hear properly. Anyone experience anything like this? Thanks for reading, Steph.
Hi Steph,
I have had this a few times, but only now and again. With me I get it more when I have a bad cold or throat infection or something, and then my hearing goes terrible, until the pressure in my ear clears. It feels similar to when your ears pop at high altitude, and for a while there everything is muffled. Exactly like you say, like trying to hear underwater.
The well known methods work for me, - hold your nose, close your lips tight and blow hard into your cheeks.
I’m yawning now trying to figure out how your ears pop, and I’ve just noticed my ear pressure changes too. Though it does go back to normal, almost straight away, especially after I swallow really hard.
It must be more severe with you, if its constantly effecting your hearing, every time you yawn. How annoying !
Oh and another idea is to chew gum, or suck hard boiled sweets.
Have you thought about seeing an ENT specialist to get to the bottom of this? I would get it checked properly (ent), to rule out infections and so on, and avoid uneccessary damage to your hearing, just in case. Even though this nasal spray is working for you as some kind of temporary relief, have you asked for more help?
