Has anyone had vertigo using a treadmill? Is this something that gets better with time if so? Reason I thought of a treadmill is because when out walking my leg just stops walking after 10mins. If I push myself further it’s very hard to safely get home. So thought
I might be able to work on increasing my walking distance more easily with a treadmill but the vertigo is terrible particularly when I get off it
Hi @jmr
I’m one of the lucky ones in that I can still walk as far as I like at the moment but, I have to be careful not to bump into things or get lost.
I don’t suffer with Vertigo. A tread mill sounds like a great idea
I think it’s possible to get one with hand rails on the side that might be safer for you.
Best wishes mate

That’s really annoying when you’re trying to do what you can to help yourself and then even that is problematic. I don’t know what to suggest - my mobility isn’t great and I find things like treadmills and similar to be helpful, but I don’t have the problems with vertigo. One options is to try a course of physio to try to strengthen particular muscle groups and get the best use possible out of the bits of you that do still work and respond properly to instructions to move/lift etc. I’ve been doing that for the past few months, and definitely think there are marginal gains. The permanent damage that’s done is done, obviously and cannot be undone, but there might be scope to help your body develop limited workarounds that help with the day to day. I do feel there’s a little bit of that going on with me and I have had MS for a long time now and wasn’t expecting to get even a tiny bit more mobile and secure when moving around. Of course that might all turn to rat-shit tomorrow because MS can do that, but we’re all used to that, aren’t we?
I hope that you work to get a bit stronger and steadier on your pins brings you benefits.
I’ve found when using my treadmill it’s placed close to a unit for me to hold on to, and I’ve got a small remote control so I stop it before getting off. Also I’ve found when walking not to look around as that tends to make me feel unbalanced and that’s usually when I take a tumble.
Hi @jmr My little treadmill has a sturdy bar at the front for me to hold onto, plus a device that connects to the machine and to me to stop it if I were to take a tumble, but because of the sturdy bar at the front I can’t see this happening.
I have terrible balance problems and I’m a full time wheelchair user and this one really works for me, sadly I don’t go on as much as I’d like, but anything is better than nothing, good luck,
Jean
