Severe spams in face and neck

I have been getting severe spams in my face and neck for about three months now and they are getting worse. When i go to bed they seem to be more severe and i am getting a ringing or buzzing sensation in the ears. When i am eating the mouth pains more and it is difficult eating. I was dx sometime ago with VS which is where you blackout. I was not told what caused it but it could be stress, pain or your adrenal function not working. I also had a severe headache and when i moved the head down the pain was worse. Any advice would be great.

Hi Joj, what does your GP say?

What drugs are you on? I would say you should perhaps be on something that could calm the spasms down… Amitriptyline or Gabapentin or Pregablin. Any of those would also help with the pain.

You really need to take something to try and help these symptoms which I’m sure are very distressing.

If they think the adrenal function is not working, are they following that up with tests? I don’t know anything about it but maybe there is treatment.

Anyway, bottom line, you need to get medical advice and your GP would be the best place to start.

Hope you can get it sorted soon,

Have taken this medicine but it was like taking nothing, did not have any effect. I have fibromyalgia well thats what they dx me with and when i went to doctors about spams he just said its your stiff neck that causing the problem.

Hi Joj,

You’re not going to get this one sorted over the internet, I’m afraid. As Pat says, you need to go back to the GP.

I’m in no position to say whether the spasms could or couldn’t be caused by fibro, as I know very little about that condition. But regardless of the cause, you need medicine that works!

It’s not that unusual for the first treatment tried not to work. Medicine is almost as much art as science, because everyone responds differently. So when your doc prescribes something they think will help, it doesn’t come with a guarantee. Some medicines take a while to build up to full effectiveness. But if you’ve persevered for a reasonable time, but there was still no improvement, you need to go back and say so. You also need to explain the impact on you - that it’s affecting eating, sleeping etc, so your doc understands you’re not talking about something minor.

I’m not saying he/she does think that, but pain is very relative, so if a patient says something hurts, it’s very hard for the doctor to know, without further detail, whether they mean “excruciating”, or just “annoying”. A pain that interferes with eating is relatively serious, so you need to make sure you explain that bit, and don’t just say something like: “My face hurts”.

Please go back and try again. Doctors don’t deliberately give you stuff that doesn’t work, but sometimes perseverance is needed, to find the right thing.

Joj, please go down the usual and highly ethical medical route of seeing your GP and getting referals… please don’t be sidetracked by unproven and slightly bonkers theories as above.

Haha, looks like the mods finally acted on newbies being misdirected to explore total bunkum!

Only trouble is, it now looks like it was my post that was “bonkers”.

JoJ - there’s been a post removed that contained rather wacky and unconventional advice. The mods seem to have concluded (rightly, in my opinion), that this “advice” was not appropriate.

I’m sorry if you read it and felt confused.

Tina

Yes everyone… it’s not the lovely Tina’s post that was bonkers!!!

The bonkers post has left the building!
