New diagnosis (almost)

Hi

I have had various symptoms affecting my right leg for 4 years and 2.5 years ago they got significantly worse and I now walk with a stick.I had a clear lumbar mri, clear brain one but a demylineating lesion was found on my cervical spine. Thoracic spine fine. It looks like ppms (I am 62) and I am terrified. I had optic neuritis when i was 23 and no other symptoms until 35 years later. In my own mind I think it was set off by covid but i’ll never know for certain. the neuro is insisting on a lumbar puncture to meet the guidelines though he is very much leaning to ppms. Any advice or thoughts.

Hi,

I don’t have PPMS so can’t comment much on that specifically.

But I have had a lumbar puncture and I wrote about the experience on this site - so if you search for lumbar puncture “read this first” you’ll find it. My experience was very positive. I’m glad I had it since it meant I could be diagnosed properly, it helped to clear up doubt.

As regards the PPMS, I think there is now a treatment called ocrevus that can be prescribed in some cases. I wonder whether you might be eligible for that?

And if you have MS of any sort, you can also ask for help with symptoms, apart from any DMT you may be offered.
