Neurology appointment?

Hi I’m Tasha and I’m 19, recently I was admitted straight from the doctors to the hospital because I had a problem with my heartbeat. I was admitted for 4 days and whilst there I experienced numbness in my legs, the doctors checked for obvious signs of the cause but when I describe my other symptoms of my muscle weakness and pains in the last few months, they said they would book me in for a neurologist appointment in a few weeks. I had bloods taken for a special test but not the results back yet. I got a letter saying my appointment was booked for the 1st April but I got a call from the hospital saying they needed to see me on Tuesday instead! Should I be worried they’ve brought it forward?!

Hi Tasha,

I know it’s hard, but try not to read anything into it. Maybe they’ve just had a cancellation or something, so can fit you in sooner?

We’ve had a post only recently, about the perils of trying to second guess, based on such limited information as timing of appointments, or perceived hints the secretary may or may not have been trying to give you… That person had assumed, because of being seen soon, that it was definitely something serious, but in fact, she’d been lucky with the waiting list, and it was that neuro’s policy always to see everyone, so the appointment was just to tell her nothing sinister had been found!

I can’t promise the same will be true for you, of course, but it just illustrates trying to work it out that way isn’t very reliable.

It may also be something other than MS. Despite normal MRI’s (other than CSM which we knew about) I had a call saying that the neurologist had said I must be seens urgently - i.e. < 2 weeks. It turns out that I have generalised myasthenia gravis and not MS and neuro wants to get me on treatment ASAP.

There are many neurological diseases so don’t get too hung up on it being MS.
