MRI with contrast crucial?

Hi all.

How important is it to have contrast with your 1st MRI in trying to get diagnosed? (I’m awaiting my scan referral and 1st consultation at the moment so no idea where this is heading). I’m hypersensitive to alot of medications so would rather give this a miss if possible.

Thanks for any help.

Hello, not sure if this is helpful, this was my experience …For my first mri I had without contrast. I believe they can from this see any problems/lesions. If there are any areas of concern and then you move on having a contrast mri for a more in-depth picture and see if lesions are old/ and or new. Good luck! Btw I am very sensitive to so much and take antihistamines everyday, the radiologist check this before so were aware and on the ball. I had no problem with the contrast dye.

That’s interesting to know you had no reaction to it whilst also being hypersensitive.

May I ask were further precautions taken for you because of this?

I didn’t have with contrast on my first/ diagnostic scan ( and come to that I’ve not had with contrast over subsequent 16 scans).

Hello, they did not give me anything to prevent any reaction, just were at the ready to react should I have a problem. I react badly to anaesthetic so I was concerned, but explained this and gave me an assurance that the dye was low in chemical content, and was some sort metallic dye to show enhancement on the scan. It very very rarely causes a reaction. It feels cold going similar to anaesthetic thereafter you won’t know it there! Best wishes.
