Loss of a child

Has anyone had to go through the pain and grief of losing a child ? Our youngest son, aged 31 died in a workplace accident in the Spring & it’s been a real life changer trying to cope. Everything seems pointless now, even my MS but I’m trying to stay strong for my wife and elder son, had counselling and probably will need some more to be honest, to try and navigate this all.

God bless can’t imagine anything more devastating than burying your child. Life can be so cruel. I never had kids so can’t comment really my sister lost Liam shortly after his birth. It still affects her now. You can’t look back we are not going that way but you need to grieve , being strong is good but dont forget yourself. Take care.

Hi @Redman I’m so sorry to read this, I myself haven’t had children, our choice, so I can’t imagine what you’re going through, the only way I have some insight is that my older sister lost her son at the age of 19yrs in a car crash, not his fault, not drinking/drugs or anything like that, just a terrible accident, that was nearly 30yrs ago and it’s only in the last 5yrs that her and her hubby have started to find some joy, through their daughter and grandchildren.
So I wish all good things for you and your family, hold onto each other, get what ever counselling you can, my sister didn’t want it, I’m not sure that was the right thing, but we’re all different, take good care of yourself and each other,
Jean

I’m so sorry for your loss. I haven’t suffered the pain of losing a child, only from my Parents perspective as my Brother died 6 years ago unexpectedly. I don’t know how they managed to stay so strong, I guess they felt they had no choice but to keep it together for the rest of us, much like you must feel. I totally understand the feeling that everything seems pointless now, because I felt exactly the same way, I just wanted to be with him. You just take every day as it comes, if you need to cry, just cry. Definitely better out than in. The grief doesn’t go away, you just find that eventually, you learn to manage to live with it. I found solace in bereavement forums for the first few months afterwards, it helped me not to feel so alone. As a family, we found it hard to talk about my Brother for a good while, but eventually we could talk about our memories from time to time. Life is definitely not the same without him, feels like something is always missing. My Dad died a few months ago, so that’s been really hard to deal with, but losing my Brother is like no other pain or grief I’ve experienced, so I can only imagine how tough it is for you, your wife & elder son. If you found counselling helpful, carry on with it, there’s no time limit on grief. Hopefully your strength as a family will help you through. I wish you all the best.
