Sorry to ask but is there anyone who is using ISC and willing to talk to me about input/output levels ?
ie I know I need to drink more but what sort of output should I BE GETTING ? I am a bit paranoid about if I am emptying properly as my consultant was SO insistant that I must ISC 5 times a day now…he was very concerned about the residual left in bladder.
I am getting about 200-300mls each time … does that sound normal ? Any comments appreciated.
I think the bladder should pretty much empty itself normally. If you mean there is still 100-300mls left in the bladder after you first void normally and then find this amount left to empty with a catheter, then that would definitely be a high level of retention. If you mean you pass this volume with a catheter having not voided normally beforehand, then I would guess it is probably normal variability, sometimes the bladder being more full than at other times. I am guessing you are doing ISC at timed intervals; if you were just doing it when you feel the urge to urinate, then I would think there would be less variation in the volume.
I have no actual urge whatsoever which means I just void a little usually 50-70 mls then use catheter. I was doing ISC 3 times daily but have now been told to use it 5 times daily.
My concern is that I am not leaving any residue to cause infections.
who’d ever have thought that i’d be discussing my bladder and bowels with strangers online and with men and women in real life at the ms therapy centre. it’s a bit liberating really but thats just me - i’m weird!!
i always self cath in the morning after my shower and usually get 300mls. in fact it worries me when i only get 50 mls.
i usually do another self cath in the evening.
i cannot give up coffee. the strongest the better and this will make my bladder play up.
i do my self cath in the shower but i cant do it on the loo - positioning the mirror and generally faffing means it goes all over the floor.
i sometimes use the bags and sometimes some pee goes on the floor. that worries me - have i got a baggy urethra?
try not to get too fixated because that always makes everything worse for me.
Thanks for that, I had to go up from 10 to 12 size due to dribbles and that fazed me…this is all daft as I worked for years with people who had caths but they were indwelling and I never had to measure unless it was someone new to caths.
Guess I will find something else to fixate on soon lol.
I’d talk to your continence nurse for some more qualified advice. When I do it I think I probably get about 500mls, but then I don’t do it as often as you. However I can usually somehow feel that the bladder has fully emptied - I can get a definite sensation, though I doin’t how best to describe it. I just did a quick google search for how much urine we should pass a day & found one site which said roughly 1.5l, so if you’re getting 300ml 5 times a day then you’re bang on the money.
Hi Dan, why on earth did I not think to google ??? Brain fog !
Thanks for your reply, it certainly makes me feel more relaxed about it all knowing I am not leaving residual.
My problem is that I have no sensation.
My urodynamics test was stopped when they got to 700mls as they said they would stretch my bladder if they went on. I retained 630mls of that even after they made me cough several times ( which felt like I got rid of gallons : ) The doctor who did the test told me catheter 3 times a day but then I got a follow up app unexpected 3 weeks later to see the senior consultant who scared the breath out of me by starting the conversation with " I am afraid I have some bad news for you " thankfully his" bad " was just increase to 5 times a day as apparently my nerve damage means my bladder does not contract and has probably been stretched already.
My continence nurse is a bit of a waste of space to be honest.
I have Coloplast nurse coming tomorrow to sort the Peristeen out and she used to be an MS nurse so I will probably have a chance to talk it over with her too.
