i have had 2 firemen here today and thought it right that i share what i have learned…
they did proper check of plugs/sockets and if they were overloaded (one in sons room was)
fitted heat alarm in kitchen.
gave advice re using stairlift in event of fire.
noted my keysafe number should they need to get in.
i asked re how they knew if there was anyone with health/mobilty issues in the house-and they said only by folk telling them. now as its all compterised then they can note such things easily on their computer system.
they also wrote down in my phonebook (cos i cant!) the local and central contact numbers.
they said that if i did have a small cooker fire and couldnt clean up afterwards they would do it safely. but felt it was important enough to repeat.
Tthats interesting, specially the part about knowing a disabled person is in the house.
Here in Gloucestershire we have a ‘message in a bottle’ system in operation, and emergency services are aware of them. All it is 7s a small bottle and inside is all info regarding any disabled people in the house, eg name, contact details, illness and medication etc, and the little bottle is kept in the fridge, cos the fire brigade said in case of fire that the fridge is one of the last things to burn. They are given free to vulnerabe people by the local authority.
If you already know about these sorry, but if not maybe worth you enquiiring.
Sorry about my typing, today has been a bad tremor day, take care.
When i registered as disabled with my local council they told me they would place my details on the emergancy services database so that in the event of any kind of emergancy it would flag up automatically that there is a disabled person in the house. i thjought that was rather brillaint
unfortunately not had any nice fireman round the house to give meadvice though, shame, i do have a bit of a thing for men in uniform xxx
Hi ellie , i am registered disabled on the surrey count council register, maybe its different in other local authorities. I also hva a registration card that i can use on public transport etc for reduced fares etc.
I’ve been visited by a very nice fireman, he fitted three smoke alarms and advised on best escape routes etc. Didnt mention anything about being on a special disabled list, but then I didn’t know to ask.
i have a card that gets me on buses free. a taxi card to get reduced fare which i have never used cos no local taxi’s can take my powerchair-one does but hes not in the scheme!
but i am still not aware of a specific list that says i am disabled.
onmyown-seems to be regional differences.
steve-i have been waiting 8yrs on u popping round-decided to enlist help of local fireman
This must vary area to area, I had fire safety check and some good advice, but when we asked if they could put a marker on our address indicating a person with disability lives here, they said it was not possible.
I had 3 burly firemen lift me into bed, after my carer called them, when there was smoke in my kitchen. I was on the commode at the time and she took me into the conservatory, where my access in/out of the house is.
It was an uplifting experience!
I have a tube in my fridge with a the details of my condition. There is a green and white cross on my fridge door and the emergency services recognise this sign means to look for the tube,
