I had inflammation in the optic nerve. There was deficiency in my field of vision. That’s because of multiple sclerosis (ms). Now, I’m cured. My field of vision is good. I can see everything but the image that I see is a little bit darker. I find it is hard to read small text and I can’t distinguish between a bright white colour and a darker white colour. I can’t describe well because of my English but there are still some remaining issues with my right eye.
Will these issues remain for ever? If no, how long will it take to be fully cured?
I don’t know if I should use my eye or relax it?
Should I close my eyes for 10 min per day or something like that to relax it and not to stress it?
Or should I close the healthy eye and use the weak eye to activate my brain and the optic nerve?
I was told to just make sure I get regular eye checks, use my eyes like I normally would and that the damage to the nerve was permanent but your eyes might adapt to the damage that happens so your vision might return to close to where it was before the attack but the nerve itself will never be the same. go see an optician who is aware of optic nerve issues because it actually reads like you are still having problems since you can’t distinguish between lights and darks and that can be a sign of the nerve having problems
I had optic neuritis more than 25 years ago and was left with permanently reduced field of vision in my left eye. I saw an eye specialist earlier this year and he told me that I was extremely unlucky to have been left with my vision so badly affected. He said that most people who get optic neuritis recover fully, or nearly completely.
If you continue to have problems, go to a specialist and have your eyes checked. It’s not something that a High Street optician can help with.
once the nerve has no blood flow to it, it dies and can’t “fix” itself. Your eyes are amazing at adapting to damage but there is really only so much that can be done if the damage is too great. field of vision is the biggest problem people have after problems with their optic nerve. I know there are some studies going on to see if that can be fixed or improved, so people are looking in to it.
I think its neat to see pictures of the nerves, your can clearly see the “dead” nerve compared to one with active blood flow. actually some high street opticians do have the tech and knowledge about it oddly enough. at least around here, but I live in an area with a lot of people with MS so that might be the reason for that. but going to a specialist might be a good idea if you are still having problems, your gp should be able to refer you. or depending on the DMDs you are on if any, you might get seen right away by someone to check out your eyes.
