I was diagnosed with MS in 2005.I struggle with my mental health. Can you recommend books on living with a long term health condition that might help?
Hi @alandgavin, I’m sorry to hear you’re struggling with mental health at the moment.
Might not quite fit the bill here, but I felt very uplifted by How to Live When You Could Be Dead by Deborah James. I read it a while ago way before my MS diagnosis so again, might not be very relevant to chronic pain but remember it gave me a boost at some low moments.
I remember having a friend who said she felt very affirmed by The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka during a period of especially bad chronic pain!
Joan Didion had MS but didn’t write much about it - she does have an essay on chronic pain/grief here, however: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/53d691ede4b0326a80e05bb6/t/551b5628e4b09bd0ea2cb89d/1427854888137/In+Bed_didion.pdf
Will keep wracking my brain and post any other recs for longer reads specifically about dealing with ongoing chronic pain, but sure there’s some good stuff out there.
Shout if you find anything which really helps you too? Would be interested in any recommendations if you find anything.
