Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone else has found that MS affects their mood.
Lately I’ve been feeling more emotional and irritable than usual, and I’m finding it difficult to know whether it’s just part of living with MS or something others experience too.
If you’ve dealt with mood changes, what has helped you? Have you found anything that makes day-to-day life a bit easier, whether that’s medication, counselling, exercise or just coping strategies?
I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences.
Hello @Snowyzlala As I understand it MS can definitely affect mood. I don’t know the biology of it but MS can sometimes have a direct effect on the body’s systems that regulate moods , emotions etc.
more generally, the facts of having such an unpredictable and not fully understood condition and it’s various effects on pretty much all aspects of life is enough to affect even the most cheerful people.
I’ve been taking Citalopram for years now - 20mg a day or sometimes reducing it to 10mg.
Exercise is definitely good! Not only for mood especially if it’s exercises outdoors but also for helping the body in dealing with MS. Exercise, in whatever way you can , is a must.
Another thing I do is mindfulness/meditation . I’m not good at doing it on a regular basis but it is good to do.
I have used periods of counselling from time to time including not long after I was first diagnosed. Also definitely helpful
