Always check accessibility before you party...

We were invited to an event at the weekend, a friend had got married and we were on the list to attend a party to celebrate. The event was at a local pub/hotel they said was suitable for a wheelchair user… Read more…

Hi Deborah

Glad you enjoyed meeting up with family and friends, but what a palaver go through!

I think a lot of people, including me, have had similar experiences, my cousin could not understand why I declined her invite to her party, until after the event. We knew that the building had 10 steps to get in, then a flight of stairs to the event room, and in a powerchair completely out of the question. She did admit afterwards that she had no idea the building was so inaccessible, to the point that her elderly guests struggled. I wanted to say “I tried to tell you” but kept quiet.

Definitely check and double check before you go anywhere is a good mantra to hold.

Sounds like you still rock to me, Deborah.

I’m glad to see the steps didn’t stop you and that so many people came up to say Hi. I’m going to my brother’s wedding in six weeks. Most of the people will not have known me in a wheelchair but I’m really looking forward to it. It will involve two train journeys as well. Fortunately, I know the venues as I lived right by them for twenty-six years.

Best wishes, Steve

Oh Deborah, what can i say I both laughed and cried at your blog…iv’e been in similar situations where i wanted the floor to open up and swallow me up. Most times i tell myself that they will probably never see me again! My Son got married last month and i have to say that he thought of everything and it was fantastic and i had a wonderful time. My nieces wedding was a different story… i was unable to go to as she had booked a venue up a flight of stairs with no lift. I’m afraid i bottled out, the thought of it really worried me so i didn’t end up going Lee had to go alone.

I loved the bit about your Shoes…I always tell people that its one of the perks of being in a chair I don’t have to wear practical shoes, i love my heels! im with you on wanting to look fantastic and dress up i think now that i’m a wheelchair user its even more important for me to look good. I laughed about you asking “does my bum look big” another perk of being in the chair…nobody sees it! and you can get away wth having your button undone at the back of your skirt…it wont fall down!

Well done on a fantastic blog

Thanks for your great comments, hoped you’d enjoy reading that one, as a carpenter should always measure twice and cut one, going to any event you should check twice the accessibility before going. All the best Deborah

Yep good advice, we are doing a dry run to the hotel where our son is having their wedding dinner I know I can get into the part venue but the hotel is a couple of hundred years old but was refurbed two years ago with lifts etc so I hope I dont suffer your problems. Glad you enjoyed things. XXX Don

a good job weve got a sense of humour we have to with ms.A similar thing happened to me, I was on the first floor in a shop when the lift broke 4 men had to carry me in my wheelchair down a flight of steps. If it hadnt been for my sense of humour i would have been really embarrassed .My daughter and grandaughter were frightened they were going to drop me .We have had to learn to take everything in our stride.Toilets are my main bug bear.Keep smiling everyone Jo xr

l was hoping to go to the wedding of a neighbour - known her 31yrs.Since she was 1. The little village church she is getting married in has no parking on the road. And it is a long path uphill to the church. So l shall take your advice - and check it out. Looks like l shall just have to join them at the reception - which will be in another village in the pony club field - marquee. The families are doing the reception theirselves - country style. ln fact the bride and bridesmaids are riding their horses to the church.

So l also need to suss out the toilet arrangements. Portaloo’s are OK as long as they are not up steps.

That’s Life!!!

Hi I read your blog with loads of empathy, as I am a full time wheelie with a catheter. I always have an empty bottle and wipes with me.

Im going to a funeral on wed and had to check out the wake venue. I could hardly ask the bereaved if theyd considered my needs, could I?

The crem put a lift in some years ago, a the stairs were impossible for anyone with a mobiilty issue.

Loved the high heels story. I stick to flats. but i have lots of very colourful pairs.
