airport security

hey folks, I hope you’re keeping well

I have RRMS and an assortment of unpleasant symptoms, including difficulties walking and the potential for embarrassment. this means airport security can look a little daunting.

I have flights booked for next month and tried to contact one airline (vueling) w/r to disability access, which I understand is available for getting through security. however, I’ve had no luck getting through to them and I’m feeling a little perplexed as to what to do, who to contact…

what are your experiences here? what options are available? is it possible to organise at the airport on the day of the flight?

enjoy your weekends

Recently I managed to arrange assistance at Edinburgh airport on the day. I was sure I’d done it in advance but apparently they had no record. However, it all worked amazingly well. I got wheelchair and priority boarding as well.
I was travelling to visit family in Midhurst, West Sussex and flew to Gatwick followed by train to Haselmere with change in Guildford. The whole return experience was stress free and amazing including a separate lounge in Gatwick. The train people rang ahead to tell the station which coach I was in so they were in the right place to help.

If you’re travelling in the UK you’ll get wonderful help if you ask.

Hi James. I hope you’re well mate :+1:

I assume that the way to go would be as Moira did - by contacting the airport rather than the airline.

Obviously, getting arrangements squared away before you get there would be ideal but, there’s usually an assistance person somewhere on the concourse and, I believe that the security people are trained in more than just security. Yes, that is their job but, They’re also trained to keep passengers safe and act with empathy. You’ll hopefully find that they’re great as soon as they see your difficulty with walking.

Try to relax and enjoy the flight mate :crossed_fingers:

Have a great time and, let us know how you got on when you get back :+1:

thank you so much for this moirah, much appreciated - and I’m glad to hear all went smoothly.

where did you ask on the day? was it the check-in desk for your airline, or was there a specific desk for disability access?

hey jon, thank you for this. I hope you’re well as can be

appreciate all this. it’s reassuring - I’d hoped to arrange beforehand but getting through to the airline has been almost impossible. I’ll keep an eye out. have you had experience with this before?

looking forward to updating you all in a few weeks

No mate - the last time I flew anywhere, I could still see straight and find where I needed to be properly :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

@ jamesdjgale in Edinburgh there was someone from the airport standing outside who was very helpful. Indeed, anyone vaguely official looking was helpful. Best of luck with your travels. I hope they go as smoothly as mine.
