Air coolers

Like many of you with MS my wife dislikes the heat (and cold) but she also suffers with what I can only describe as hot flushes, (and cold ones too at times).

It’s not unusual to see her sitting in a warm room wearing a thick fleece and a with a blanket wrapped around her, or alternatively it may be quite cool and she will suddenly begin to divest herself of most of her clothes as she is too hot.

This is not menopausal as she is way past that. It does unfortunately have an adverse effect on her MS.

The heat is worse than the cool and so I’m looking at different ways for her to cool down quickly.

Does anyone use a portable air cooler? Any recommendations if you do?

I’m not looking for an air-conditioning unit to affect a complete room, it just needs to be a quick blast of cool air, probably a maximum of ten minutes is all that is required.

Does overheating has an adverse effect on MS ?

Then I would recommend air cooler or some humidity controller or fountain, I guess.

Hi MS can affect the bodies ability to regulate temperature. Also overheating can make MS symptoms worse (uthoff phenomenon).

i have a dyson air blade fan, it’s expensive but great for a quick cool down, or warm up! I have read about people using cool packs from the freezer on their necks but haven’t tried this myself.

The over heating feeling is horrid so your wife has my sympathies.

It does for my wife, if nothing else (and there is) it makes her spasms worse and more frequent.

Have you used an air cooler? Do they work well? Buying one is easy, buying the right one is harder.

Any particular reason for a humidity controller?

Fountain?

Thanks Mousey, that’s really helpful, I’ll check out the Dyson.

(I’m not a fan of Dyson stuff generally though).

Hello AJ

I use Magicool. A body cooler & freshener aerosol for a quick fix.

When I used to holiday in the Mediterranean I used a tub of baby wipes to which I added a pinch of menthol crystals and a few drops of eucalyptus oli. This improved moist tissue is unbeatable. And less of a shock than the spray. Fans just shove the warm air from one part of the room to another.

Anthony.

(when I say I’m hot I’m really cool man).

Thanks albrecht, she’s got a cool spray somewhere, and some sort of cool gel /ice rub, I’ll have to remind her about those.

Menthol crystals and Eucalyptus oil now on my shopping list.(or eBay perusal list anyway).

The air coolers are more than just fans - they have a water tank which you fill with cold water (and freezer blocks) the air is taken across a filter which is soaked in the cold water and should provide at least a temporary cooling effect.
