Access to Work

Hi Has anybody on here ever had a home assessment for ATW? If so what happens and what can they/do they offer/provide? Thanks Paula

Hi Paula,

Depends what would make your work life easier. Taxis to and from saves you getting tired driving to helper worker to help you do parts of your job you find difficult; furniture; infrastructure. There is a cap of I think £41000 PY; that is ATW cap; your employer does not pay. See Access to Work: get support if you have a disability or health condition: What Access to Work is - GOV.UK

Hello, Paula.

I had an Access to Work assessment in my place of work. It could easily have taken place at home but the assessor wanted a first hand view of my work environment. The provisions they proposed were comprehensive but there were some details they couldn’t furnish. I was a primary school teacher and a successful teacher needs to be interactive and mobile. I was losing that ability to be both everywhere and to prowl the classroom looking for learning opportunities. There were also issues with going to the toilet. The famous MS thirty second warning does not help in any type of job.

In the end I was assessed as unfit to teach. I dare say I could have persisted but I was only four years away from retirement.

Hope this helps, best wishes, Steve.
